What Level Of Riding Do You Think I'm At?
April 10th, 2009 | Fly Fish Lessons | 10 Comments »For those of you who saw my other question, i am having second thoughts about it being wonderful, so am looking on dreamhorse =)
I can do jumper, hunter, and medal courses at 2'6" with flying changes
w/t/c with ease
ride a spook(most of the time, unless its very bad)
can ride a buck, rear, and bolt (as long as its not like crazy)
can half pass
w/t/c bareback
post without stirrups for a couple minutes
have jumped up to 3'3" because on school horses that as high as were aloud to jump.
and i have ridden the more advanced school horses, jumped a few times, but mostly in my flat lesson
so do you think i would be okay with a horse that says intermediate rider?
I am not fishing for compliments, so be brutally honest.
just to add, in your opintion should i stick with a super well schooled horse, or one that says intermedite(sp sorry)?
just so i know what i'm looking for, i will ask my trianer for help with the desision next time i see her.
oh, i reciently learned to ride with off my leg on a super schooled horse of course. i was using my hands to much… so i got to try riding in a small ring without reins… how fun. actually it was. =)
scratch the with before off
haha, yeah when i jump 3'3" it isn't as pretty as 2'6"… or very pretty at all. but i can do it! yay! the first time i tried i lost my stirrup over the jump, resulting in eating dirt.
Without seeing you ride, I'd have to take your word and say advanced-intermediate. You never want to say you are a better rider than what you are, let whoever is doing the judging figure it out for themselves that you are either a) you are at the level you say or b) are better than you say. Be MODEST so you don't end up hurt!

I would go test him out and then have a vet check on him to make sure the sellers are being honest. Then ride him and see if you can ride him nicely or if you like him at all. If the sellers don't let you ride the horse that's not good always test a horse.

Jumping height is good.
wtc is good
ride a spook? thats fine.
buck rear bolt- better than most who can't ride one at all.
half pass? Great!
wtc bareback- thats good to hear, good balance.
post w/out stirrups- keep practicing and you can go for longer and longer.
jumping height, again, is great.
thats good, you sound pretty good, I'd say intermideate rider. Yes, you should be fine with that. remember to try it out.

You aren't going to get to be a better rider if your don't have a challenging horse. I think you would be alright with an intermediate. but again, the horses you are riding are trained to do flying lead changes and such. it's alot more difficult to get a horse to do that kind of stuff if it doesn't know what you're asking. so go for intermediate, but not green broke. and again, just because you CAN do a 3'3" jump doesn't mean you can do it well. lol. even i don't look great doing one of those.

that's me on my horse that i trained, and i still don't look great going over a jump.
but i Can do it.

You are ready for an intermediate horse, as long as you have a trainer to help you through the rough patches. A super well schooled horse or ex lesson horse will make you bored! Good luck and happy horse hunting!

ya know what some hroses you can say ur a advanced rider and some you have ot go back to basics. So it just depends on the horse your on.. i mean my old horse i was an advanced rider jumping 3' w/t/c lead changes, trail rides, bucks, so on so forth.
Then i got my new mare and all hell broke loose, i litterally had to go back learning how to stear due to everything compleetly different. I mean it was bad. Also you said u use ur hands too much instead of compleetly droping ur reigns take and cross them put ur right reign in left hand and left reign in rigt hand. haha its harder then it sounds. im not exactly sure how my instructor did it to me but ya.. lol

from what your saying i think you would be fine ! just remember some horses need discipline and confidence and if you have always ridden schooled horses then make sure your willing to keep a horse in line. example dont be afraid of your horse and let him/her get bad habits.

You sound great. I would say advanced beginner until you begin to ride some intermediate horses, and it sounds like you are ready to do that. That will give you the experience and help advance you.
You did some bridless good for you isn't is fun
Good luck,
Jenny

I have also done showing for most of my life, and it is very hard to tell what level you are on when i cant see you ride. I have been judging hunter jumpers for a while now, and i'd have to say your are "upper" intermediate level. Make sure you stretch your arms on the higher jumps and you will look great! Ride with your legs not your feet, there are no need for stirrups for balance. I had to do a show and on my second jump i lost my stirrup and finished just fine, won 2nd actually –
you sound like a good rider, now match your horse with your level and make sure he can grow as you can.

I started of on a intermediate horse. I know it was dumb but I have had him almost a year and now we are jumping 4 ft and everything. It took a few falls and a few bad days but couldnt be happier. You will adjust to him once you get it if you are determined I did.
