Fly Fishing- How Much And Where Do I Put Gink?
May 4th, 2009 | How To Fly Fish | 2 Comments »Im going fly fishing for my first time and I need to know how much and where I put the gink on the dry fly. I am leaving soon
Gink is an excellent floatant!
To use it squeeze a small amount from the bottle onto your thumb-you don't need much, just a fine line of it, more if your using larger salmon and steelhead flies. Ensure that the fly is dry before putting it on, otherwise it wont work as well.
If you need to dry the fy before putting it on then make a few false casts-this will generally dry most small dry flies.
Simply rub it into the WHOLE fly including the dubbing on the body and hackle, make sure you don't use too much as its easy to add on but harder to remove.
Don't forget you can add a little to strike indicator yarn if it sinks, finally don't use gink on CdC dry flies(cul de canard-i.e. duck feathers) as it will clog the fibers instead natural CdC oil is better or Loon Aquel-works on both CdC and normal dries.
How much depends on how big the fly is. Just put a dab on your thumb and forefinger then rub them together lightly until the gink liquifies. Rub this into the fly and wipe the excess off of your fingers. The fly should be fairly well saturated but not dripping wet.
