They’re not even comparable. Fly fishing is SOOO much more than just setting the hook on a fish.

Oh yeah i’m sure thats the way it is. I would get nervous too. Didn’t mean anything derogatory by it. Great vid by the way.

I kid around with John (the guy casting) a lot about his casting in this video. He’s normally a very good caster, but when the tapes rolling, it’s much different. This was all filmed in one day, lots of pressure to catch a fish while the film is rolling :) . You feel like you need to be perfect, instead of being just being relaxed and natural.

I agree with atstsu and hatterasdream, he is not a good caster. at about 1:40 into the video you see him dumping his back cast. I would be afraid to be in the same boat with him.

    Fortunate and lucky …
Fortunate and lucky :) 8 weight rods are the norm here as well, besides the fly factor, we might hook into a 50″ musky or a big pike :) I’ve seen the Susky, never fished it though, passing through, reminds me of the Upper Mississippi.

    I fish the …
I fish the mid-section of the Susquehanna River in PA (Marysville up to Liverpool). 8 weight rods are standard. I’ll use a 5-6 weight when I fish up in the tributaries where the bass are smaller.

I consider myself very fortunate to live near such a smallmouth factory. 3-4lb smallies are common with some 5 and six pounders having been caught (but not by me… yet). When the timing is just right, 30+ fish days are normal.

    Is it Spring yet?

    Shorter rods equals …
Shorter rods equals less distance, tighter places, longer rods more distance & line control. 9′ is considered standard, then you go up & down from there. I’m 6’1″ and throw all 9 footers and 1 8’5″.

Great video! He’s right, I find that flyfishing and especially fly tying are calming and I go to the vice often when I want to relax or calm down, works every time. Thanks for posting great job!

    It depends on what …
It depends on what size/type of flies your throwing, distance your casting, bigger fish you might catch, etc. An 8wt will throw big/wind resistance flies further then say a 5wt. You can still land fish on either, but easier to cast with an 8wt. An 8wt will help you land that 60″ musky in the river he’s fishing.
