…i was testing this in my backyard before I ever went to a river(just using a sinker instead of an actual fly) lol dunno what was going on but the result was me getting hit in the face with a small piece of metal!

    Just get out and …
Just get out and fish. There are usually some good regional magazines to help you decide good times/fly selection. I started out by asking around at the local fly shops and striking up conversations with other fisherman on the river. If you are polite and honest about your abilities you will be amazed how willing people are to pass along some knowledge. Good luck and tight loops.

    dale and ardeth, my …
dale and ardeth, my bet would be that your backcast angle is too steep, and/or that you apply force a bit too late. both these things can send your fly to the ground. by applying some decent acceleration to your rod right at the start of your backcast, you’ll give your line some upward momentum that will help. for the angle, look at your rod all the way through till a good one becomes a second nature. curling simply = too little or too much velocity, only practice will help there.

    You’re not pausing …
You’re not pausing after your back cast. Start slow, then fling back the rod, pause and watch your fly, then go forward again. Get a rhythm going and you’ll eventually get the line to lay down properly.

    the whipping is …
the whipping is caused by you not waiting long enough in the back cast so the line does not have time to completely make its turn. The whipping on the water means your accelerating to much and if its making whipping sounds its not having enough time on the back cast. Start slower then go faster. Make sure the loop size is perfect.

Starting at horizontal or below, yes, but try starting with the rod tip just above the water’s surface like an inch off.You will notice the difference dramatically in the back cast. Also notice where the wind was coming from in the video ? its a lot different harder with no wind at all.
