Angler is imitating the juvenile stage of aquatic insects with fly fishing nymphs. As a result all fly fishing is done underwater not on top of the water.
An angler will not see a rise or the fish itself pop through the surface when gulping in a fly unlike when in dry fly fishing. An angler normally will be unable to see the actual fly itself when using nymph. When fly fishing with nymph, being unable to see the fly itself makes problem because it is difficult to detect the fish strike and set the hook.

The fly fishing nymphs are always floated along or just near the river bottom yet another challenge from fly fishing nymphs and it will constantly bump into underwater obstruction specially rocks. When the fly fishing nymph hit a rock, this bump causes the beginner angler mistaken as fish strikes. In the end the nymph will actually hook a rock, leading to the fun of getting the fly unstuck from whatever it hooked. The angler who is doing fly fishing with nymphs will have to use special methods and techniques to get their fly down into the water.

Dry fly fishing is very easy to do because all fishing occurs right on the surface and everything in dry fishing is 2 dimensional.

With fly fishing nymph, the angler will need to figure out how to get their fly to the depth and determines how deep the trout are by adding a third dimension to their fly fishing.

To accomplish this requires being able to know how to make accurate casts as well as getting your nymph to the right depth. Trout tend to be much more subtle when they eat nymphs. Trout often times hit a fly really hard and trout unfortunately don’t show this characteristic with nymphs when in dry fishing. And due to the fact probably make bulk of trout diet in the form of nymphs.

A trout tends to slurp in nymphs gently and sometimes being lazy and waiting for the nymphs to float on the water. So setting the hook with nymph properly is extremely important for being success in fly fishing with nymphs.
