The Reel Deal: A Learners’ Spincast Fishing Reel

June 9th, 2010 | Fly Fishing News | No Comments »

A lot of learner fishermen will begin their pastime in the first place, by buying a rod and reel as a set; but a lot of us will buy the rod & the reel as separate items, and may need some tips on which reel to buy. Some of the best ways of deciding on a starter reel is to ask other fishermen; to join a local club, or to go on a learners’ fishing school where kit can be rented.  One of the most popular choices is the closed face, or spincast reel.

So Where to Start?

Because they are easy to use and inexpensive compared to other designs and easy to come by. Spincast reels are the choice for parents who would like to introduce their kids to fish – but not simply for the young, they are also ideal for the learner fisherman.  As they do not have a rotating spool to overun, fouling the line, the problem of backlash is solved.

With an absolute plethora of reel-makers, selecting your first reel can be a complicated and confusing minefield: Abu Garcia, Zebco, Sage, Shakespeare, & Shimano…the list of manufacturers goes on. In these high-tech days, an internet search of the internet also results in a mind-boggling array of choices, but does offer what are generally the top discounts to be found.

Suggested Spincast Reels?

A great range of reels is regarded those made by Abu Garcia and amongst their wide tried-and-tested range is the Abumatic series, and a good example is the Abu Garcia Abumatic 576i Spincast Reel, incorporating several engineering innovations such as level-wind mechanisms (oscillating spools), and improved drags for fighting bigger game fish. Line memory is not much of a problem with spinning reels, so they are relatively tangle-free and provide comparatively long, smooth casts. More recent updates include the use of modern alloys, making the reel less weighty whilst still being long-lasting; and are easy to maintain.

Other features:
• Ultra-smooth spool drag system
• Duragear drive
• Instant Anti-Reverse
• Titanium nitride line guide
• Dual rotating swing-arm pick-up pins
• Left/Right hand retrieve
• Comfort Touch™ thumb button
• Pre-spooled with 110 yards of 8 lb. Berkley Trilene XL Line

For those of a technical bent, this reel has a gear ratio of 3.6:1 (meaning for every one turn of the reel handle, the bail arm will make 3.6, 360 degree rotations).

Do not stint on quality when you buy a spincast reel; you get what you pay for.  Renowned for excellence in fishing gear Abu Garcia’s Abumatic series is a great starting point; light and durable the Abu Garcia Abumatic 576i Spincast Reel makes a fine entry-level reel at a fair price, for the
novice, child, and even the more experienced fisherman.
