Deep Sea fishing in Costa Rica holds exhilerating adventures from catching massive marlin to schools of tunas. Costa Rica fishing is unique for it’s wide array of diverse fish species and it’s pulse-pounding level of excitement. The following story is from our most recent Fishing Report:

Fishing for gigantic Cuberra Snappers is a feat worthy of the most experienced fisherman. Using relatively standard equipment and this outside-the-box fishing tactic, the Captains of FishingNosara.com have had great results on these monstrous fish.

First, we rig our live Bonita (also called Black Tuna) to the Penn International 50W off both long outriggers. Each of them are trolled with a J hook in the forehead and a circle hook in the dorsal. The speed is set at a lively 2.5 knots to keep pace with the Bonitas.

It will take about an hour for the bite to happen. Though the surface seems calm, eighty feet under the deck those two active Bonitas are creating a buffet-sized feeding frenzy. The giant Cuberra Snappers will emerge from their sanctuaries to find out what the fuss is about.

Realize that a big Cuberra Snapper is no dummy. Cuberras over fifty pounds are over thirty years old; they have to pass on a lot of lures to get this big. On the rare occasion they hit a a hook, they are usually close to deepwater sanctuary and can cut the line on a coral chunk.
