A poorly tied knot may mean losing a prized catch. Therefore, you want to make sure you tie them properly. There are a few things you should keep in mind when tying fly fishing knots. This article will give you a few tips.

Lubrication

After you have tied the knot, you will obviously need to tighten it. However, before you do so, you should make sure the line is well-lubricated. When you tighten the knot, the friction creates heat that will weaken monofilament. Lubricating it beforehand will help decrease the amount of heat generated when tying the knot. Simply dip it in water or put it in your mouth to lubricate it with your saliva.

Hold

It’s best to tighten fly fishing knots using a slow, continuous pull. After that’s done, it’s best to test it by pulling on the line and leader quite hard. You want to make sure that your knot will hold before you even try to land a fish with it.

Trimming

After tying your knot, you will need to trim excess material away. You can simply use nippers for this. Although you want to trim away material as closely to the knot as possible, you need to make sure that you don’t get close enough to damage your knot.

Trash

Speaking of trimming, you will probably have excess material lying around afterwards. This isn’t a problem if you’re tying fly fishing knots at home, as you can just throw them in the trash. However, if you’re tying them close to the water, you need to put excess material in your pocket or vest. It will harm fish as well as other animals if you leave it lying around.

http://www.flyfishingoutfitters.com/p/s/listing.aspx?sid=XSB. “Side-to-side movement is pretty intoxicating for any predatory fish.”

So says Charlie Bisharat, inventor of one of the most revolutionary flies in recent memory, the Pole Dancer.

Born of Charlie’s “love for topwater stripers”, the Pole Dancer was designed to imitate the action of conventional lures like the Zara Spook and the Lunker Plunker. As experienced bass and striper anglers know, this zig-zag, ‘walk-the-dog’ action mimics the movement of a wounded baitfish, and is far more enticing to big-shouldered fish than any ordinary in-line retrieve.

The Pole Dancer fly achieves this unique action in large part thanks to its molded foam head, which builds water pressure on one side of the fly when retrieved with sharp stripping motions and causes the fly to veer from left to right and back again.

For the Pole Dancer to achieve this action, everything about the fly must be in balance. To ensure this, the head is held neutral by weight placed toward the back of the shank, and tail materials are kept evenly distributed by a beefy monofilament anti-fouling guard.

Beyond these functional design attributes, the Pole Dancer has a few nice touches that are characteristic of almost any fly that’s successful with predatory fish: big eyes and a red ‘bleeding’ gill slit add a level of realism that help seal the deal.

Though it was first developed for stripers on the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta system, the Pole Dancer fly has done very well in tropical settings, particularly in Baja, for roosterfish and sierra mackerel. Just like Mr. Bisharat’s other pattern, Charlie’s Airhead, the Pole Dancer makes an outstanding go-to topwater fly in any scenario. For optimum fishability, fish the Pole Dancer with Rio’s Outbound line, which is ideal for turning over big saltwater flies. Pick one up at http://www.flyfishingoutfitters.com/fly_lines-rio-outbound_short

Having fished the Pole Dancer firsthand on the Delta with Charlie himself, the Leland Team can only guess at all the applications and venues where this fly will prove invaluable. As you might imagine, Leland is thrilled to be one of the first shops to bring the Pole Dancer to market.

Egg fishing flies are highly effective bait for trout and salmon during the fall when fish are swimming upstream and spawning. In fact, during this time of year, fresh eggs of their own kind make up a large portion of trout or salmon’s diet. With so many fish swimming up stream during spawning season and so many nutritious eggs floating downstream, fly fishing with these can make for a bountiful trip.

A look under water:
While trout and salmon lay their eggs upstream in mostly-safe spawning beds, plenty of eggs are jarred loose and lost to the current. These loose eggs float downstream and into the waiting mouths of fish positioned downstream. The fish are naturally attracted to the eggs of their own species, which contain a rich variety essential nutrients and proteins.

The eggs of spawning fish, and consequently egg fishing flies, come in a variety of sizes and colors. Choose yellowish orange for Rainbow Trout, Steelhead, Coho Salmon, and Chinook. Bright orange quarter inch egg flies are better suited for Brown Trout. Be sure to also carry some white or off-white in your tackle box to mirror the color of the many unfertilized eggs that don’t take on a color.

Casting:
Since eggs have no movement of their own, they must be cast for dead drifting downstream. Egg fishing flies should be cast far enough upstream from your target that the fly has time to settle on the bottom. Since these fishing flies are bottom drifters, they are prone to catching and sticking on plants and rocks on the river bottom, so be sure to pack lots of extra fishing flies.

The bright color of these fishing flies aid in the detection of a bite when the water is somewhat clear. In murky or deep waters, a strike indicator is necessary to determine a take. When using an indicator, you’ll need to watch very carefully and strike just when fish subtly suck in the egg fishing flies.

Tackle and Line:
When fishing with egg flies, just about any standard rod or reel will do. An 8.5 to 9 foot rod and floating line is ideal for most waters while heavier rods can be used when facing big, hard-fighting fish. For maximum effectiveness, it’s important for egg fishing flies to sink rapidly. In thick or fast moving waters, applying a little dish soap to the line can help the egg to slide to the bottom quickly.

The ideal time for fishing with egg fishing flies is right around the corner. The months of August through December are when salmon and trout are laying their eggs in the cool waters. So while you may employ your bug fishing fly for the majority of the year, the fall and winter months give you the opportunity to add a new weapon to your arsenal.

Your main method of landing a fish is probably your rod and reel. However, fly fishing nets are still very useful tools, especially when using a light leader and tiny fly. If you’re looking to buy a net for your next outing, there are a few things you need to consider beforehand. This article will give you a few tips on choosing the perfect one.

Handle

One of the first things you need to consider when buying a net is the size of the handle. If you want a design that’s easy to maneuver and compact enough to transport easily, you need to look for a shorter handle. This is the better choice when wading.

If you’re fishing from a boat, you’ll need a longer handle because you’ll have to reach farther to the waterline. There are also nets that have sliding or telescoping handles. These are your best bet as you can shorten or lengthen the handle to suit your needs.

Frame

You also have to think about the material that the fly fishing nets are made from. Some of the most popular options include wood, aluminum, and fiberglass. Fiberglass and aluminum designs are usually stronger and lighter. This makes them easier to maneuver while ensuring that they’re sturdy enough to land bigger fish. If you choose a wood design, make sure that it’s of high-quality.

Bags

Another important consideration is the bag material. They are usually made from plastic, rubber, nylon, and cotton. Cotton and nylon bags are safer for fish as they won’t damage their mucus coat easily. Rubber bags are also less damaging, although they’re pretty heavy.

Transportation

One of the final things to consider when buying fly fishing nets is how you want to transport them. Some can attach to your vest using a magnetic clip that you can easily release. There are also plenty other options to choose from. Two other common attachment options include spring-loaded cables and Velcro. You’ll just have to choose the type that you prefer best.

Ospreys (Pandion haliaetus), when hunting on the wing, seem to glide effortlessly over the water. Smaller than an eagle, an osprey is still an impressive raptor. With wingspans of up to 72 inches and up to 24 inches in length and a weight of almost 5 pounds, the osprey is a wonderful addition to Montana’s rich abundance of bird life.

A Handsome fish hunters, the osprey has a distinctive white head and belly with rich, dark brown feathers gracing its back. The undersides of the wings are also snow-white except for dark patches and barred-brown flight feathers. Ospreys vocalize with a series of piercing whistles and chirps that become more intense if the nest is approached. Osprey nest just about anywhere in close proximity to water that provides safety and an abundance of food.

Osprey prefer to nest on the top of dead trees, however; their nests are visible on power poles, bridge trestles and rocky outcroppings. Montanans respect the osprey’s freedom and honor that by establishing nest locations. All along the rivers of Montana nest platforms especially designed for osprey safety and comfort have been installed. Such platforms are an integral part of re-establishing the osprey in areas where they have disappeared.

Even during their autumn migration to Central and South America, osprey follow the river valleys to stay close to water. Ospreys fly south from Montana in October, returning during March and April to rebuild their nests. Both the female and the male work to gather driftwood, branches and twigs to build their nest. However, it is the female of the species that does most of the labor of fabricating and crafting the nest. Ospreys assure the safety and comfort of their hatchlings by lining the nest with soft leaves and grass. Female ospreys frequently decorate their nests with bright bits of material, paper or plastic they have found.

Like the eagle, osprey will reuse nests from the previous year, patiently adding new material, repairing wind and weather damage and enlarging their comfort zone. Over time some osprey nests have grown to jaw-dropping dimensions.

The osprey’s affinity for water is based on his diet which consists almost entirely of fresh fish. They rarely eat anything else. The osprey hunts by hovering over the water at altitudes of up to 200 feet, then diving feet-first to grab a tasty trout. Mother Nature has provide the osprey with extremely sharp, long claws and barbed footpads called spicules that enable it to grasp a slippery fish. The osprey also has a dense, oily plumage as well as nasal valves that prevent water from invading the nostrils when the osprey fiercely dives to capture its prey. Oddly, the feet of an osprey each have reversible front toes that facilitates their grasp in the water. However, ospreys can’t swim and several have been known to drown. This happens if they find their talons stuck in too heavy a fish and cannot become airborne.

When an osprey successfully snags a meal, it dramatically shakes its wings as it clears the water and then repositions the fish in its talons to face forward to reduce drag. The osprey will fly to a perch or if it has young, return to the nest to enjoy its meal.

In late April or early May the osprey lay their eggs. The normal clutch has three. Curiously, the eggs do not all hatch at once, with the first chick hatching up to five days before the last. Often the oldest chick becomes an overbearing bully, snatching up the choicest food brought to the nest by the parents and depriving its siblings of much needed nutrition.

The speckled appearance of osprey chicks in the nest provides excellent camouflage, however; many still fall victim to raccoons, owls and eagles. If they escape the claws of predators and are able to obtain enough food, the young ospreys will leave the nest in July or August. At about two months of age they are developed to the point of caring for themselves.

Ospreys have a complicated social structure. Normally ospreys pair for life, however; if the mating is not successful, they will seek new partners. When a female osprey chooses her mating partner, she doesn’t judge by good looks or fishing skills, but like her human counterpart, chooses the male with the best house (nest) in the best neighborhood (location). When ospreys are tired of the duties of parenthood, they will often withhold food to forcefully encourage the fledglings to leave the nest. Still wanting an adult to provide for them, osprey fledgling will often move to nearby nests where they receive food from other parent osprey.

When ospreys are 3 to 4 years old they will find a suitable partner and mate. Most male ospreys will return to the area from which they themselves fledged. The magnificent saga of the osprey continues.
